Magazine Cover Template- Planning

This is the first magazine cover layout that I created. The title, displayed at the bottom of the page, is "Chatoyer". This mean "shimmer" in French, which is a nod to the shimmer or glisten of a camera or photo itself. The placement of the title is a bit unconventional for a photo magazine, but still plays into the theme of photography. I planned on having at least three featured articles around the cover photo; although, the number and placement of these articles depends on which cover photo I decide to use and how the article headers mold around it. I chose the font Microsoft Himalaya for the headers and title because it is simple yet elegant and gives the cover a classy feeling.








Because I felt that the first cover photo was a bit too unconventional for a photography magazine and perhaps reflected more of a fashion magazine, I created a second cover template. This one is called "Technique" because of the many picture-taking techniques that will be written about in this magazine. This template more correctly demonstrates what a photo magazine cover looks like: the title is on the top center of the page and the font (Arial Black) is simple and not very elegant, just like a real photography magazine. Just like the first template, there are multiple story previews that will wrap around the cover image. The proportion and position of these may change once the cover picture is added. Overall, I like this template more than the one shown prior because it looks more like a photography magazine. Because of this, I will model my final cover off of this template rather than the first one.

Because of viewing multiple media products such as "The Newsroom" and analyzing various magazines, creating a magazine seems like it would be a challenging yet enjoyable experience. I like to take photographs, so stockpiling my magazine with various images would most likely be the most gratifying task for me. Also, designing the layout might be fun as well, but could also be difficult, especially when attempting to figure out new software. However, studying magazines and blog samples in class have heightened my skills and will prepare me to face this challenge if I do decide to make a magazine. Revision- Cover Page

     Revising my cover page was a bit difficult because my peers gave me many conflicting opinions. Some people loved the way my cover looked while others believed that the design should be changed. My feedback was a bit broad, so it was difficult to figure out how exactly to change my cover; however, I did get one helpfully specific critique: add an outline to the star that contains the words "EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH PHOTOGRAPHER".      The photo shown to the left displays the border I added to the star shape. I used the color Accent 2, Lighter 40% to match the blue theme of my cover. I tried different colors and shades, but anything lighter than this was barely visible and anything darker contrasted with the text too much. While the edit is small, it polishes the cover page and makes it look more aesthetically appealing.

Target Audience Research- Digital Photo Magazine

     The target audience for my magazine is around 20-60 years old, and my magazine does not apply to a particular gender. It applies to people from all over the world, but mostly people in first-world countries who have access to DSLR cameras. The magazine applies to many income levels, mostly the middle class and a bit of the higher class. These people are at least high school graduates, and there are many college graduates in the mix as well. Of course, my target audience must be interested in photography, which is what my magazine revolved around.      A magazine that has a similar target audience is Digital Photo Magazine ( DPM ). For one, both of our audiences are photographers, which is the main attribute that readers of DPM and Technique should possess.
